    This week we filed a Freedom of Information petition against the Municipality of Netanya, as part of our efforts to assist groups and individuals whose rights are being infringed upon in connection with the clash of religion and state on the national and local spheres. This time our petition followed our efforts to help residents of four condominiums in Netanya of residents who have been trying unsuccessfully to get the municipality to stop the public nuisance caused by a Haredi group that was given permission by the municipality to use a public bomb shelter and the adjoining area (situated directly adjacent to their residences) for prayer and religious activities.

    Last week, Hiddush filed a petition in the Supreme Court on behalf of itself; the Israel Women’s Network; NA’AMAT; the Rackman Center; and Women Lawyers for Social Justice to ensure adequate gender representation for women on Religious Councils and senior oversight appointments.

    As the legal scene in Israel heats up, mostly characterized by uncertainty as to what's next, and when it will finally settle down, Hiddush continues to actively pursue its legal advocacy. While encouraged by indications regarding both public opinion and commitments to religious freedom and equality voiced by some by key parties, legal advocacy remains a necessary and effective avenue to advance Hiddush's mission, even as the wheels of justice turn ever so slowly.
